MILESTONES ACHIEVED UNDER ONE YEAR AS MINISTER FMENV

  • Pollution Control -:- National Role out programme for INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT and recycling in major Urban centers  with successfully established pilots in Lagos, Kano, Aba…….. and others in various stages of planning and establishment
  • Completed an assessment of a National State of Affairs of the Environment report – 2nd National Communication Document to be in the Public domain by May 2010
  • CLIMATE CHANGE – Increased awareness at all levels through the following activities
  1. Establishment of building blocks for handling Climate Change issues through (a) Inter-Ministerial committee ,(b) National Sectoral Stakeholder Committee on Climate Change
  2. Hosted the 1st National Climate Change Stakeholder Roundtable Conference (August 2009), International Carbon Credit Conference (Oct. 09), Media Roundtable December 09 and just concluded Post Copenhagen Climate conference in Feb. 2010.
  3. Initiated and or supported Anti- Bush burning and Tree Planting initiatives
  4. Instituted National Tree Planting Campaign through SMS messaging in collaboration with MTN
  5. COP15 -Prepared a National position and headed the African Technical Team in the Just concluded World Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen with over 300 Nigerian delegates from public and Private sectors in attendance.
  6. Successfully lobbied for the establishment of the proposed Climate Change Centre for Excellence West  African region, in Nigeria
  7. Increased and Strengthened collaboration with Development Partners in development of strategies and initiatives which are ALL currently ongoing – National Adaptation Strategies(NASPA) and Plan of Action(NAPA)
  8. Registered three CDM projects which put Nigeria on the lead with nearly 40% of total Certified Emission Reductions (Carbon Credits).
  9. Established Public Private sector Collaboration to drive the  initiatives and harness the opportunities of Climate Change. This resulted in a well attended Nigerian Business Forum Side Event in Copenhagen Denmark.
  • REGULATION – Strengthen our regulatory departments –NESRA & NOSRA for better regulation and enforcement of Intl and domestic environmental soft laws
  • NATIONAL ASSEMBLY – Frequent briefings with both the Senate and House Committees on issues, Strategies and Challenges of the sector.
