Late Chief John Ogar Odey – 1 November 1959 – 7 October 2018
John Ogar Odey, Nigerian Minister of Environment, is a graduate of the University of Calabar , Nigeria . He holds a B.Sc. degree in Finance and Banking. After his graduation, he took employment in various private firms before his foray into the arena of politics and public service.
He led the Nigerian delegation to Copenhagen on climate change conference in December 2009 and was the head of African Technical Team at Cop15.
After an extensive experience in the private sector, Chief Odey delved into politics and before long he emerged as the Commissioner for Agriculture, Cross River State . In this capacity, the Minister initiated a number of fundamental projects that formed the foundation of the success of Cross Rivers as a State on the upbeat of development in Tourism, Peace, Wealth Generation, Environmental preservation and Agriculture today. Among vital projects initiated by the Minister while he served as the Commissioner was the state forest conservation project through the stoppage of annual bush burning by farmers in the State. The Forest Conservation project thus formed the fulcrum on which the Bee-Honey project at Obudu revolves. The project is a vehicle to organize the youth and farmers in Cross Rivers State to embark on the cultivation of bees to produce honey as a way of generating revenue and wealth. Today, the product of that effort is found in every top supermarket in Nigeria under the label, â€œObudu delightâ€. It is a wholesome pure natural honey.
Chief Odey left the Service of the State Government to become the National Spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was in this position until he was nominated and inaugurated as the Minister of Information and Communications by President Umar Musa Yarâ€™ Adua (GCFR) in July 2007. While he served as the Information and Communications Minister, he brought new vista to public information management through the propagation of collaborative information management strategy, which involves carrying every stakeholder in the Information and Communications sector along on all public issues.
He was retained in the Federal Executive Council and re-assigned the portfolio of the Minister of Environment by the President in December 2008.
His stint in the manufacturing sector, close working relationship with the financial institutions and his immediate past political positions have exposed him to high level personalities both nationally and internationally.
He is married and blessed with children.
